I had heard from multiple sources that, in the late 70's, you could sit stage side in the clubs in East St. Louis, and the dancers would let you go down on them for a dollar, which is the inspiration for the fifth panel. The interior of this club is completely made up, however.
There are private VIP rooms at upscale strip clubs now. My ex-girlfriend used to get VIP calls and would disappear for a while. I asked her once if she had to be nude there but she never really answered me. I learned a lot from that experience visiting where she worked. I guess anything could happen, but management kept an eye out for the girls’ safety. I never saw the kind of side action mentioned here in the club I visited. Mostly lap dances. I know this is a fictional panel from DD but the depiction of back stage is pretty accurate, I think.
The backstage areas are based on similar rooms in San Francisco at that time. St. Louis, Baltimore, and Tampa Bay had similar rooms. Chicago was more iffy. There were back rooms in the seedier clubs, but I’m using some author extrapolation to put them in a high end club.
Big Ed, I understand your thoughts on this panel and the background for it. I like DD and the way it is developing and moving. You’re a talented writer and your illustrator is very talented as well. I never saw the VIP Lounge at the club I visited. My ex-girlfriend would never let me pay for a session with her. I respected her as a woman and I also learned a lot from her that made me want to take her out of that environment. Much like Brandy’s boyfriend in DD. Good writing and good comic panel, too!
